Griffin Rasche and Shannon Shovlain each came away with a singles victory as St. Ambrose opened the 2016 season with a 7-2 loss to a tough Grinnell team at the Assumption tennis courts Sunday afternoon.

Both Rasche's victory at No. 1 singles and Shovlain's at No. 6 came by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores.

The Bees were close in other singles matches. Mary Alice Oswalt lost the opening set 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Alex Horton fell 7-5 in the first set of her match at No. 4 singles. Nikki Steiner lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.

Steiner teamed with Shannon McEachern at No. 3 doubles and dropped an 8-6 decision in the most competitive doubles match of the day.

Saturday, SAU travels to Menomonie, Wis., for a pair of meets, starting against a 9 a.m. matchup against Wisconsin Lutheran. The day ends with a dual against Wisconsin-Stout beginning at 12 p.m.
