St. Ambrose Director of Athletics Ray Shovlain announced today the hiring of Garrett Wimberly as the head men's and women's lacrosse coach. He will begin his duties Sept. 1.

Wimberly, the 2013 Deep South Conference Coach of the Year while at the University of Memphis, will join St. Ambrose after serving as a volunteer assistant with the VMI lacrosse program in 2016.

"I am thrilled to be joining the St. Ambrose University family. It is an honor and privilege to coach at such a great institution that carries a rich history of success within the Athletic Department," Wimberly said.

After playing for the University of Memphis club program as a goalie and midfielder from 2008-11, Wimberly started his coaching career at his former high school, St. Benedict at Auburndale in Memphis, Tenn. He took the school to its first state championship game appearance in 2012 as the team finished as runners-up in the TSLA Division 2.

Wimberly then returned to the University of Memphis to guide the men's club program. He transitioned the team into the Deep South Conference and helped the team earn back-to-back winning seasons in 2013 and 2014 while earning his conference coach of the year award.

He was the head coach at Houston High School in Germantown, Tenn., in 2013 before returning to St. Benedict in 2014 to become the boys and girls head lacrosse coach.

Wimberly takes over a St. Ambrose men's program that has qualified for the postseason in two of its three years. The Bees joined the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) this summer as an associate member in men's lacrosse. He will also begin building a women's program that will start play in the spring of 2018.

"I believe that our Lacrosse programs can succeed in the KCAC and NAIA. The NAIA is growing at a rapid pace. With Coach Shovlain and the SAU Athletic Department being ahead of this trend, I feel we have a strong advantage moving forward," Wimberly said.

"During the interview process, I immediately noticed the passion and commitment SAU holds towards the Athletic programs. The commitment to build new state-of-the-art facilities is a dream come true for any coach and will make recruiting to SAU very promising."

"We are very pleased with the hiring of Coach Wimberly," Shovlain said. "He has experience at all levels and has coached men and women. We are very confident he will successfully lead our lacrosse programs."

Wimberly graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Education, Sports and Leisure Management in 2011.
