St. Ambrose University President Sister Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD, announced today the University will add men's and women's varsity swimming & diving and women's varsity lacrosse next academic year. The women's lacrosse team will begin play in the spring of 2018.

Additionally, SAU Director of Athletics Ray Shovlain announced the hiring of Garrett Wimberly as the head men's and women's lacrosse coach at St. Ambrose. He will begin his duties on Sept. 1.

Since 2009-10, the University has added men's and women's bowling, men's lacrosse, athletic band, and now men's and women's swimming & diving, and women's lacrosse.

With the three additions, the SAU Athletic Department will offer 12 men's and 12 women's varsity athletic programs as well as two coed programs - cheerleading and athletic band.

"We are very excited to start these three programs," SAU Director of Athletics Ray Shovlain said. "They will provide additional opportunities for student-athletes and allow us to attract additional, quality student-athletes to St. Ambrose."

The women's lacrosse team will play at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex and the Ambrose Dome while the swimming teams will use the new pool at Davenport Central High School.

"This partnership with the Davenport School District will provide new enrollment possibilities and expand the current opportunities for intercollegiate experiences for our students," said Lescinski. "The addition of these new athletics teams, meanwhile, re-affirms our belief in the benefits intercollegiate athletics bring to the student experience."

"We are appreciative of the Davenport Community School District and the District's Director of Athletics Jon Flynn in allowing us to use the new impressive Davenport Central pool facility," Shovlain said.

A search for a head men's and women's swimming & diving coach will begin immediately.
