The Fighting Bee men opened up their season by taking fourth at the WIU Early Bird Invite.

Skylar Mitchell led the way and established a new school record, crossing the line in 13th place with a time of 19:49. The Bees have never run a 6km race so their team time of 102:35 is also a school record.

It was the first time in Mitchell's career at SAU that he was the Bees No. 1 runner. Mitchell finished 26 seconds ahead of Grant Colborn with Jonah Niedermeier right on his tail.

Farther back int he pack were AJ Engelsen and David Whittle. The two came in just over 21 minutes. Whittle was a varsity scorer in his first race as a Bee. Rounding out the varsity 7 for SAU were Reid Henry and freshman Sam Long

Augustana College won the meet, followed by NCAA D-I schools Fort Wayne and Western Illinois.

"This is a good start for us," SAU head coach Dan Zeimet said. "We're about where I thought we would be at this point. We've really raised the bar from a training stand point this year and we're hoping to see some big results throughout the year."

The Bees will be back in action in two weeks as they'll travel to the University of Notre Dame fo their National Catholic Championships.
