Women's Basketball - Wed, Feb. 1, 2017

St. Ambrose took control of Wednesday's game right from the start. The Bees raced to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 61-39 win over Lincoln Christian at Lee Lohman Arena.

SAU's defense was suffocating, especially in the first half. The Red Lions were limited to 27.3 percent shooting for the game - the second straight Bee opponent held to 27 percent from the floor - and just 19 percent in the opening half.

Lincoln Christian started the game by hitting two of its first four shots in taking a 4-2 lead. It would take more than 12 minutes for the Red Lions to score again. LCU missed its final seven shots of the first quarter and its first four shots of the second as St. Ambrose jumped ahead 16-4.

While SAU shut down Lincoln Christian into 2-of-11 shooting in the first quarter and 2-of-10 in the second, the Bees built a 21-point lead late in the half on a Reeann McCarty jumper. Two Lion free throws cut the margin to 29-10 at the break.

In that decisive first half, St. Ambrose forced 14 turnovers and grabbed a 25-13 rebounding advantage. Hailey Cook had eight first-half points, McCarty had seven and Emily Soy and Aubrie Carlisle six each.

Brette Logic and McCarty opened the second half with baskets before two Carlisle free throws pushed the lead to 35-10. SAU coasted from there.

All 13 Bees who played scored at least two points. Cook and McCarty led the way with 11 points apiece. Carlisle finished with eight, Soy had six and Karli Atkinson added five. Morgan Wheelwright, Charlotte Flynn, Gabrielle Koelker and Hannah Ford each scored three points.

SAU, now 9-15 overall, returns to CCAC play Saturday with a game at No. 16 Cardinal Stritch. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
