In a way, it was a fitting way to wrap up the home portion of the schedule.

The Bees battled back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game late, only to falter down the stretch in a 103-92 loss to Saint Xavier Wednesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

It's been the story of the season for St. Ambrose, another down-to-the-wire loss for a team that has lost seven games decided by two possessions or less.

SAU ran into a hot-shooting Saint Xavier team early that built a 27-14 lead just nine minutes in. The Bees battled back to take one-point leads on two separate occasions, the first coming on a John Kohnle 3-pointer early in the second half and the other on a Jacoby Posley three with 13:09 left.

But after an Eric Dust offensive rebound and put-back cut the deficit to 82-80 with just under six minutes to go, the Bees watched the Cougars rip off a 13-3 run to push the lead to 12 with 2:22 on the clock. SXU (16-13, 11-8 CCAC) hit six free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Dust finished with 23 points and nine rebounds to lead St. Ambrose. Dedric Byrd had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Kain Arthofer netted 11 points and Posley added 10. Blake Buls scored nine.

Before the game, St. Ambrose recognized its three seniors - Arthofer, Blake Johnson and Posley - playing in their final home game.

SAU (8-20, 5-14 CCAC) will wrap up the 2016-17 season Saturday at 3 p.m. at Judson.
