A run of nine straight goals, from late in the first period to early in the third, erased a fast start as St. Ambrose fell to Saint Mary 17-11 Saturday night at St. Vincent's.

The Bees took a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter on goals from Liam Griffin, Nicholas Cooper and Austin Adams. Caleb Neff and Jared Morgan assisted the first two.

But then Saint Mary (4-4, 2-0 KCAC) took control. The Spires, a team receiving votes in the NAIA national poll, scored the final two goals of the first and then outscored the Bees 6-0 in the second to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. The run continued in the third as Saint Mary scored 4:30 in to up the lead to 11-3.

Matt Madril sparked a bit of a run with the first of his four goals to snap the Spires' spurt. Quinn Coyle and Thomas Parker (Madril assist) scored just over a minute apart and Anthony Maciag (Dan Tieman assist) and Madril each scored in the final minute as St. Ambrose clawed to within 13-8 entering the fourth period.

Saint Mary regained control with the first three goals of the fourth for a 16-8 lead.

Madril got his third and fourth goals of the game and Coyle added his second for the final Bee goals.

SAU actually finished with a 39-35 edge in shots despite getting out-shot 14-7 in the decisive second quarter.

Louis Mallillin was credited with 11 saves in the loss.

St. Ambrose (1-7, 0-2 KCAC) will host Robert Morris Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the second of six straight home games.
