With two positions to fill, St. Ambrose head football coach Mike Magistrelli is bringing one Bee back into the fold and hiring another from within.

Today, Magistrelli announced the hiring of Vince Fillipp as the Defensive Coordinator and Brody Pogue as the Offensive Line Coach.

Fillipp, a four-year starter and 2008 All-American defensive lineman for the Bees, returns to St. Ambrose after spending the last three seasons as the Defensive/Recruiting Coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan University under head coach and former SAU assistant Matt Drinkall, while Pogue spent the 2016 season as a graduate assistant at St. Ambrose coaching the running backs. The two are assisting at spring practice, which got underway this week.

After his successful playing career concluded in 2008, Fillipp joined Coach Magistrelli's staff from 2009-13. He spent a year as the defensive line coach at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., before taking over as Defensive Coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan in 2014. He was instrumental in a turnaround at Kansas Wesleyan that saw the Coyotes go 2-9 in 2014 to 10-2 a year later, a season in which KWU qualified for the NAIA Football Championship Series. The success continued last year as the Coyotes finished 9-2 overall. Over the last two years, his defenses have ranked in the top four in the Kansas Conference in both total defense and scoring defense.

"I am extremely excited to bring Vince Fillipp back to our coaching staff," Magistrelli said. "Vince brings not only defensive coordinating experience but also deep love and connection with St. Ambrose University and our Football Program. Vince understands what it means to be a part of the St Ambrose Football Family having been both a player and a coach previously for us. He is a high-energy and positive coach who I know our players will enjoy playing for."

Fillipp, from Cary, Ill., graduated from St. Ambrose in 2009 with a degree in Sport Management and earned a master's degree in Organizational Leadership from SAU in 2011.

Originally from Benton, Ky., Pogue got his coaching start at St. Ambrose last year. A graduate of Marshall County High School, Pogue became a first-team all-conference offensive lineman at Illinois College. During his time there, the Blueboys set several school and national offensive records and finished in the top 10 in multiple offensive categories each year.

"I am just as excited to have Brody coaching our offensive line in a full time capacity," Magistrelli said. "He has a working knowledge of our program having been on staff for a year but also brings great perspective having been a part of another successful program at Illinois College."

Pogue earned his degree in Economics from Illinois College in December 2015.
