The work the Fighting Bee student-athletes put in the classroom was recognized at the national level as the NAIA announced today St. Ambrose led the nation with 20 Scholar-Teams.

Twenty of SAU's 21 eligible programs had a varsity cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better to qualify for the award. Concordia (Neb.) was second on the list with 19 Scholar-Teams. Three additional Fighting Bee programs - athletic bands, men's bowling and women's bowling - had qualifying GPAs but those programs are not yet recognized as official NAIA sports.

The SAU football team's 3.15 GPA was the third-highest mark among all NAIA football programs. The men's volleyball team finished fifth in its sport with a 3.11 GPA. The St. Ambrose women's basketball team, with an athletic-department best 3.63 GPA, was eighth among all NAIA Division II women's basketball programs.

Eleven of the 20 SAU Scholar-Teams finished with GPAs of at least 3.25. Five of those teams - women's basketball, women's tennis, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field - posted GPAs of better than 3.50.

The cumulative St. Ambrose varsity athlete GPA for the 2016-17 academic year was a 3.23.
