Women's Soccer - Sun, Aug. 27, 2017

St. Ambrose managed just a pair of goals but that was enough to scratch out a tie and a win to open the 2017 season.

The Bees surrendered a second-half goal to settle for the 1-1 tie with Graceland Saturday before shutting out Grand View 1-0 Sunday. Both matches were played in Des Moines, Iowa.

Despite controlling play much of the first half, SAU was able to grab only a 1-0 lead on Elizabeth Shealy's unassisted goal in the 13th minute against Graceland.

Not capitalizing on other scoring chances came back to haunt the Bees when the Jackets netted a game-tying goal in the 63rd minute.

Despite earning a 15-10 edge in shots, St. Ambrose finished with just the one goal.

Nicole Staines came up with five saves to preserve the tie.

The next day, Shealy's second goal of the weekend was all Staines would need in the 1-0 shutout of Grand View.

After a scoreless first half, Madison Volpert found Shealy for what proved to be the game winner in the 65th minute of a defensive battle. The two teams combined for just 10 shots, with SAU finishing with six.

Staines turned away the three shots she faced for the win.

The Bees will next visit Waldorf Saturday afternoon.
