Women's Volleyball - Tue, Aug. 29, 2017

Playing in front of a large crowd, St. Ambrose put together a late rally but ultimately fell short in a 3-1 loss to Mount Mercy Tuesday night.

Down 2-1, the Bees trailed 23-20 in the fourth. A kill from Allie Brent and the serving of Brittney Rogers brought the Bees back. Abby Happ and London Williams combined for a block before Brent put down another kill to draw the teams even at 23-23. Happ then had a kill to put SAU just a point away from forcing a decisive fifth set.

The run ended there.

Mount Mercy (3-2) fought off the first set point as part of a three-point run to close out the 25-12, 23-25, 25-9, 26-24 win. The loss dropped St. Ambrose to 1-1 on the season.

Along with the fourth set, SAU played really well in the second. An Emily Moushon kill gave the team a 2-1 lead in the second and the Bees maintained the lead the rest of the set.

The lead was as large as six points on two occasions, at 14-8 and 15-9. The Mustangs closed to within a point at 23-22 before Brent's only kill of the set extended the lead to 24-22. A point later, a Happ kill evened the match at a set apiece.

SAU was unable to carry that momentum into the third. Mount Mercy won the first six points and led 18-4, and never looked back. The Mustangs then led by as many as five points in the early stages of the fourth set before the Bees mounted their late rally.

Riley Hummert led St. Ambrose with seven kills. Happ, Moushon and Brent each finished with five. Williams added four, while Natalie Bochenek and Clarissa Blick each put down three.

Morgan Twing (14) and Marissa Boyer (12) combined for 26 of the team's 33 assists. Jenna Laxton was credited with a team-high 25 digs. Happ had 16 and Hummert picked up 10.

The Bees will next head to Adrian, Mich., for a two-day weekend tournament hosted by Siena Heights. SAU will face Lawrence Tech and Lindenwood-Belleville Friday and Spring Arbor and Siena Heights Saturday.
