Off to a 5-0 start in conference play and possibly looking ahead to hosting a CCAC Crossover event this weekend, St. Ambrose was unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead in a 24-26, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-9 loss at Roosevelt Tuesday night.

The loss dropped the Bees to 9-9 overall and 5-1 in the CCAC.

SAU got off to a fast start despite not playing its best. The Bees had nine kills and 10 hitting errors yet took the opening set. With the score tied at 24-24, the Bees took advantage of a serving error and an attack error to get the early lead.

St. Ambrose picked up its play in the second and led throughout. With the lead at 14-11, Allie Brent started a run with a kill. Later, Riley Hummert put down a kill and immediately followed with two aces. Abby Happ and Brent added back-to-back kills to cap the 8-1 spurt that gave the Bees a 22-12 lead. Roosevelt (4-9, 2-4 CCAC) fought off a pair of set points before a London Williams kill closed things out.

SAU looked poised to make it a clean sweep. Williams and Emily Moushon teamed for a block, Happ had a pair of aces and Moushon put down a kill to give the Bees a 5-0 lead in the third. That proved to be the Bees' final highlight of the night.

The Lakers won six points in a row and later took the lead for good with a four-point run to take a 19-15 lead. A Hummert kill closed the gap to three points but Roosevelt responded with four more in a row on its way to forcing a fourth set.

The Bees were mere points away from closing out the match in the fourth, leading 20-13 after back-to-back Jenna Laxton aces. A point later, Hummert had a kill for a 21-14 lead. St. Ambrose would win just two of the set's final 13 points as Roosevelt rallied to extend the match.

After taking a brief 4-3 lead on a Laker hitting error, SAU watched Roosevelt win the next six points for a 9-4 lead. The Bees got no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Hummert finished with a match-best 11 kills and led St. Ambrose with 12 digs. Brent and Happ each had eight and Moushon finished with seven. Morgan Twing led all players with 24 assists while Marissa Boyer collected 13.

Now the Bees will play three conference games over two days at the CCAC Crossover beginning Friday.
