In one short year, Carly Bettinardi has gone from freshman contributor to team leader.

A top-five player in her first year with the Bees in 2013-14, she played alongside two seniors and a junior.

But with those upperclassmen all graduating, Bettinardi is now one of two sophomores, along with Mackenzie Clawson, leading a freshman-heavy squad.

And there have been some expected growing pains along the way. St. Ambrose has yet to finish in the top half of any tournament this year.

"It's been tough at times with no upperclassmen, but we just keep trying to get better. We all have goals and we're all working hard."

That hard work culminates this season with the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships, played at Blue Top Ridge Golf Resort in Riverside, Iowa, Apr. 28-29.

And while it's probably unrealistic to expect these young Bees to compete for a conference title and a bid to the NAIA National Championships, Bettinardi and the team do have goals in mind.

"I just want us to play well. I'd like to see us finish in the top four. We just have to think of this tournament as a new beginning. And personally, I want to shoot in the 80s and definitely beat my scores from last year at conference when I was in the 90s."
