This is a new year for your Queen Bees, as they start the year with some new faces, after graduating nine seniors and a significant number of juniors, this has been a rebuilding year for the SAU Women’s Soccer Team.

With the Bees starting the year off right in the CCAC season with a record of 3-0 this year with an overall of 6-1- 2, the Bees hope to seed higher from last year and reach the national tournament. When asked about this season, Erin Smothers is up for the battle.

As a freshman, Smothers or as the team calls her “Smo,” has worked hard reaching the team's expectations. With two goals under her belt, she has been a dangerous player for the opposition with her speed and agile ability to work the ball around defenders.

Smo, from La Grange, Ill., has been playing with Eclipse Soccer Club. Smo has been playing soccer for her whole life making it a total of 14 years playing the sport. She said, “My brother was really good, so I wanted to play just like him.”

Coming from a competitive club team, soccer has molded her into the player and person she is in and out the field. Being part of a team who share the same goals is what drives her to become better every day. She said, “I’m learning my role on the team.”

When Smo was asked why she chose St. Ambrose, she said one of her teachers in school played tennis for St. Ambrose and convinced her to look into pursing a path there. Sure enough, not only was Smo able to clinch a starting spot as right-back, but pursue a path in Elementary Education just like her teacher who is a close family friend.

Just like any other student-athlete, Smo likes to hang out and unwind with friends and listen to music on her free time with her busy schedule.
