Years Coached: 3rd Season

Mark Kurtz joined the St. Ambrose women's basketball coaching staff in 2015-16.

His coaching career began in Arizona in 1986 and continued at the junior high level until 1996, when Kurtz was named the head varsity girls basketball coach at Maquoketa (Iowa) High School. In six seasons at Maquoketa, he went 60-68 and reached a regional final. He was named the Big Bend Conference Coach of the Year in 2001 and coached three all-state players.

In 2006, Kurtz started coaching varsity girls at DeWitt (Iowa). In nine seasons, he compiled a 124-87 record, advanced to two regional finals and took his 2011 team to the state tournament, where they reached the semifinals. Kurtz was a three-time WAMAC Coach of the Year while coaching four all-state players, two NCAA Division I players, a Division II player and several Division III players.

"I am excited to join the St. Ambrose family," Kurtz said. "I welcome the opportunity to help our players improve and learn the college game from Coach Van Hauen. Her knowledge, experience and passion are contagious."

Kurtz, a graduate of DeWitt Central High School, was a member of the 1981 Class 2-A State Champions. He continued his playing career at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he was a two-time team MVP and three-time all-Midwest Conference selection. The team's freshman of the year in 1982, Kurtz scored 1,004 career points and once pulled down 17 rebounds in a game, the third-most in school history.

He earned his degree in Physical Education and Education from Cornell in 1986 and then earned his Master's in Physical Education from Western Illinois University in 1999.

An English, Science and Reading teacher in Arizona for two years, Kurtz taught Physical Education, Science and History at St. Joseph School in DeWitt for seven years. He has been a teacher in the Maquoketa School District, teaching Elementary Physical Education, for the last 20 years.

Mark and his wife Colleen live in DeWitt.
