St. Ambrose falls at No. 7 Marian
St. Ambrose managed just 179 yards of total offense in falling at No. 7 Marian 49-14 Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.
Nearly half of those yards came on the Bees' lone touchdown drive, coming midway through the fourth quarter.
SAU couldn't get anything going offensively in the first half, totaling just 60 yards and two first downs as Marian built a 28-0 lead at the break.
Trailing 35-0, the Bees finally got on the board late in the third quarter. Griffin Zajac forced a fumble that was scooped up by Jaxson Nelson and returned 51 yards for a touchdown.
The St. Ambrose offense pieced together a scoring drive in the final quarter. Dino Borrelli engineered the 14-play, 75-yard drive, in which he completed all eight of his pass attempts for 57 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass to J.D. Villafuerte.
Borrelli finished 19-of-27 for 141 yards. John Benckendorf completed 2-of-5 passes for 10 yards.
Villafuerte (49 yards), Blake Wittman (32) and Garret Tiarks (21) each caught four passes. Tiarks also added a team-leading 32 yards on the ground.
Reigning MSFA Midwest League Defensive Player of the Week Jeremiah Jackson Sr. led the SAU defense with 11 tackles. Ryan Zitkus had six tackles, and Vybert Greene Jr., Ethan Miebach and Nelson were each in on five stops.
The Bees were hurt by three turnovers, two of which were returned for scores.
SAU will play its home opener next Saturday against Siena Heights as part of Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff at Brady Street Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
