Gillen named MSFA Special Teams Player of the Week

Tom Gillen was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday after helping St. Ambrose defeat No. 12 Olivet Nazarene 17-10 Saturday.

Gillen, a senior from Alsip, Ill., was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including a career long 47-yarder, in helping the Bees take down the Tigers.

He got SAU on the board in the opening seconds of the second quarter, booting a 41-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the period, he kicked his 47-yarder to cut the deficit to 10-16 at the half. Late in the third, Gillen extended the Bee lead to 15-10 with a 39-yard effort. St. Ambrose would add a safety in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

It was the first time a Bee had kicked three field goals in a game since the 2015 season.

This year, Gillen has connected on 5-of-7 field goals. He is also 21-of-22 on PATs.
