Late field goal stuns St. Ambrose
A 21-yard field goal with eight seconds left was the difference as Missouri Valley stunned St. Ambrose with nine points in the final 3:43 to escape with a 30-28 win in Marshall, Mo., Saturday afternoon.
The Bees, who led 21-7 at halftime, broke a 21-21 tie late in the fourth quarter when Tre Jenkins scored on a six-yard run. It was part of a huge day for Jenkins, who finished with 193 yards and two scores on 38 carries.
But St. Ambrose (1-5) couldn't hang on.
Missouri Valley (3-2) needed just 41 seconds to answer back but following a 40-yard touchdown pass, the extra point was blocked by Colin Gudella to keep SAU in front 28-27.
Behind Jenkins, the Bees were able to chew up 2:11 before being forced to punt. Harvey Doleman's 46-yarder found the end zone giving the Vikings the ball on their own 20-yard line with 1:32 left.
After six plays, MVC had only advanced to their 46-yard line, but a 20-yard completion was followed by back-to-back runs that netted 30 total yards putting the ball at the Bee 4-yard line. That led to the game-winning field goal.
SAU controlled the first half with Alec Ponder tossing a pair of touchdown passes to Jaylen Brazzle. The first one, a 28-yarder, opened the scoring after Jon Grant and Rolando Sepulveda teamed for a tackle for loss on a 4th-and-1 play on the game's opening possession.
Jenkins scored on a nine-yard run to open up a 14-0 lead. And with 20 seconds left in the half, Ponder and Brazzle connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass for a 21-7 lead at the break.
Missouri Valley had the only two scores of the third quarter to pull even at 21-21 setting up the fourth-quarter final flurry.
The Bees dominated the majority of the statistical categories. St. Ambrose finished with an edge in first downs (31-19), total offense (424-348) and time of possession (37:08-22:52).
Jenkins's 193 rushing yards are the most by a Bee since Kaden King ran for 205 yards against Olivet Nazarene in 2022. Maximo Vasquez carried the ball 14 times for 60 yards.
Ponder completed 14-of-22 passes for 145 yards and the two touchdowns. Caleb Swanson had three completions for 21 yards.
Brazzle finished with eight receptions for 93 yards. Joseph Spaulding and Braden Downs each made two catches. Vasquez, Kameron Bohnsack, Mikey Hellwig, Colin Shults and Brennan Wilson also had receptions.
Sepulveda led the defense with eight total tackles. Nolan Obert and Andre Cobige each recorded seven tackles. Obert had 2.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks. Gudella made five tackles and CJ Resto was in on four stops. Simi Afolarin also registered 1.5 sacks. Resto also intercepted a pass in the loss.
The Bees will have two weeks to prepare for their Homecoming game against Graceland on Oct. 18. Kickoff from Jack and Pat Bush Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
