McGinnis's Late Heroics Give Bees Third Place
Brett McGinnis converted a three-point play with three seconds left to lift St. Ambrose to a 64-63 win over Siena Heights (Mich.) in the third-place game of the Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
Mike Kennedy was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 22 points in Wednesday's win. The junior forward averaged 24.7 points over the three tournament games.
It was the SAU bench which rose to the occasion again as Joe Speth provided a spark going 4-of-7 from the field, finishing with nine points, as McGinnis, Speth, Lorenzo Fiol and Josh Hutton combined for 24 points to defeat the Saints.
In a game where there were eight lead changes, shots from the field became more critical as SAU shot 59 percent in the first half despite only hitting 35 percent of shots in the second half.
With a three-point lead at half-time, the Bees jumped out to a nine-point lead highlighted by a Bryce Davis three-point play and a Hutton early 3-pointer.
The Saints were able to get a free throw to cut the lead to two with only 1:26 remaining and it was Mark Snipes who forced Fiol to turn it over before hitting a fast break layup to tie the game. Snipes would then hit another layup before McGinnis' three point play.
SAU (9-3) will visit Roosevelt at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2.
