St. Ambrose Wins Fifth Straight Game
Dominic Jackson and Josh Hutton combined for 13 points during a crucial 24-5 run in the second half to lead St. Ambrose to a 78-71 over William Penn Sunday afternoon. The Bees, winners of five straight, improve to 18-5 overall and 7-3 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.
A back-and-forth first half saw William Penn (11-13, 3-8 MCC) take a 35-34 lead into the break.
The Statesmen scored the first seven points of the second half to build an eight-point lead and led by seven at 44-37 with just over 18 minutes to play.
Then the Bees started their run behind Jackson and Hutton. Two SAU veterans, Mike Kennedy and Justin Tiner, got things started by scoring 10 points during an 11-0 run that put the Bees in front 48-44.
Then it was Jackson and Hutton's turn.
Jackson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push SAU in front 54-48. Just over a minute later, Hutton (pictured right) knocked down two straight from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 12 points at 61-49.
The double-digit lead was short-lived however, as WPU battled back to within a single point at 72-71 with 2:21 remaining. Tiner and Bren Gillespie each hit 1-of-2 from the line to restore a three-point edge.
The Statesmen misfired on their final three field goal attempts and Tiner and Gillespie combined to hit four free throws in the final 17 seconds to account for the final score.
Tiner finished with a team-high 21 points while knocking down 6-of-7 shots, including 4-of-5 3-point attempts. Kennedy finished with 19 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Chris Donnelly scored 11.
SAU will look to extend its winning streak to six games when the Bees visit Grand View Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
