Tiner's Buzzer Beater Lifts Bees Past Waldorf
Justin Tiner (pictured right) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer to help St. Ambrose get past Waldorf 76-74 Saturday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena. The Bees are now 20-7 overall and 9-5 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.
With the game tied at 74-74, Mike Kennedy misfired on a 3-point attempt from the corner. Chris Donnelly chased down the rebound and found Kennedy again who was off on a second baseline jumper. Tiner grabbed the board and converted the game winner all in one motion as the horn sounded.
Tiner's late heroics saved the Bees, who squandered a 21-point second-half lead.
SAU scored the final seven points of the first half to take a 36-28 halftime lead. Just over six minutes into the second half, the lead was 21 at 57-36. The lead was still at 18 with less than 12 minutes to go before Waldorf (7-18, 2-12 MCC) made its run.
The Warriors hit 9-of-14 from beyond the arc in the second half and the Bees didn't do themselves any favors. SAU hit only 4-of-9 from the line over the last 6:09 to allow Waldorf back into the game.
Waldorf finally tied the game at 74-74 with 29 seconds left leading to Tiner's game-winner.
St. Ambrose shot 49 percent from the floor in the win. Donnelly led all players with 29 points, on 11-of-15 shooting. Kennedy finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Tiner scored 12.
SAU will next visit Viterbo Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
