Bees Recover From Halftime Deficit to Defeat Viterbo
St. Ambrose scored 11 straight points early in the second half to help rally for a 74-65 win at Viterbo Wednesday night. The Bees are 21-7 overall and tied for third in the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a 10-5 league mark.
SAU trailed by as many as 12 points late in the first half and was behind 42-35 at the break. Viterbo (6-23, 4-11 MCC) opened up a 10-point lead in the first 90 seconds of the second half before the Bees made their move. Justin Blondell (pictured right) scored five points and Mike Kennedy added four as part of the 11-0 spurt that put the Bees in front 47-46.
With the game tied at 54-54 with just over 12 minutes left, St. Ambrose finally took the lead for good on a 7-0 run, capped by a Lorenzo Fiol 3-pointer.
The V-Hawks got to within four points in the final minute, but SAU sealed the win by hitting 5-of-6 from the line in the final 50 seconds.
The Bees outscored Viterbo 27-12 from the free throw line. Kennedy did most of the damage, hitting 14-of-19 from the stripe on his way to finishing with a team-high 26 points. He added eight rebounds. Chris Donnelly scored 14 points and also grabbed eight boards while Blondell finished with 12 points.
SAU will host conference-leading and 12th-ranked Iowa Wesleyan Saturday at 3 p.m. with a chance to climb into a second-place tie in the conference heading into the MCC Tournament next week.
