St. Ambrose stumbles at No. 16 Mount Mercy

St. Ambrose dropped to 11-10 overall and 2-2 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play following a 93-54 loss at No. 16 Mount Mercy Wednesday night.

Mount Mercy (16-3, 4-0 MCC) scored the game's first seven points and never looked back.

The lead was double figures less than six minutes in and the Bees trailed 47-20 at the half.

SAU's best stretch of the night came in the opening minutes of the second half. Darian White hit a 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 run to open the half to trim the margin to 47-29. After the Mustangs scored to go back up 20, Greg Wagner scored inside to spark another run. Ty McLane buried a three and Sam Ainsworth hit a jumper to get St. Ambrose to within 50-37 with 15:45 to play.

But the comeback ended there. Mount Mercy reeled off nine straight points to up the lead to 59-37 and the Bees got no closer than 20 the rest of the way.

SAU shot just 32.8 percent from the field while allowing MMU to shoot at a 55.4-percent clip.

Ainsworth led St. Ambrose with nine points. Michael Knoll scored eight and McLane and Nick Frazier each added six.

The Bees will look to end their two-game losing streak Saturday at home against William Penn. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
