Frazier's 27 gets Bees past Vikings 70-55

Nick Frazier scored 27 points to move into fifth place on the St. Ambrose all-time scoring list and lead the Bees to a 70-55 win over Grand View Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

The senior guard, now with 1,969 career points, moved past Brook Viktor on the school scoring chart and now is just 31 points away from 2,000.

Frazier hit 11-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in netting his game-high 27.

Michael Knoll continued his recent strong play by recording 14 points and 11 rebounds.

And it was that pair that got the Bees off to a good start. Frazier opened the scoring by knocking down a 3-pointer, and the next trip down the court, Knoll took a pass from Blake Buls and converted inside for a fast 5-0 lead. It was a lead SAU never gave up in sweeping the season series from Grand View (10-10, 3-4 MCC).

Leading just 17-16, SAU closed the first half on a 19-9 run to take a 36-25 lead into the break. Frazier hit two threes and John Kohnle added another triple during the run.

Grand View made a run to get to within six at 52-46 midway through the second half before Frazier and Knoll combined for the next nine SAU points. A Geordon Hetherton steal led to a Frazier breakaway dunk and seconds later, Frazier buried a 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to 11. Knoll sandwiched back-to-back baskets around a Vikings' score to increase the lead to 61-58 with under seven minutes left.

Grand View never threatened the rest of the way.

While Frazier and Knoll did much of the work on the offensive end, it was the Bees' defense that stole the show.

SAU completely shut down Grand View, holding the Vikings to 29.2 percent shooting. GVU made just 19-of-65 shots from the floor, including 4-of-21 from 3-point range. St. Ambrose also dominated on the boards, finishing with a 52-36 rebounding advantage.

Sam Ainsworth came off the bench to contribute seven points and nine rebounds. Darian White had six points, 10 boards and four assists.

The Bees (14-10, 5-2 MCC) will next visit AIB Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with second place in the Midwest Collegiate Conference on the line. Both teams are 5-2 in league play, trailing Mount Mercy (6-0).
