Strong finish gets Bees past Holy Cross 59-54

Geordon Hetherton and Jacoby Posley each hit a big 3-pointer to help St. Ambrose outscore Holy Cross (Ind.) 9-3 down the stretch in a 59-54 win at Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon.

The victory snapped a three-game CCAC losing streak and moved the Bees to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

SAU led nearly the entire way Saturday but could never build more than a nine-point lead.

Holy Cross (9-6, 3-4 CCAC) used a 7-0 run to take a 51-50 lead with 4:32 to play. It was the Saints' first lead since holding a 6-4 advantage less than three minutes into the game.

But that lead lasted a mere 20 seconds as Hetherton knocked down a three on SAU's next possession to put the Bees back in front 53-51. After Holy Cross scored to tie the game at 53-53, Posley buried a 3-pointer of his own to give the Bees the lead for good.

St. Ambrose stepped up on the defensive end from there. The Saints missed their final seven shots from the floor and their only point over the last 3:46 came from the line and trimmed SAU's lead to 56-54.

But two John Kohnle free throws pushed the lead to four points at 58-54, and despite some shooting struggles of their own, the Bees were able to seal the win when Sam Ainsworth knocked down 1-of-2 from the line with 29 seconds left to end the scoring.

SAU shot just 41.9 percent from the field but forced Holy Cross into 39.1-percent shooting. The Bees also finished with a 37-27 edge on the boards.

Posley hit four 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 14 points. Hetherton connected on three threes in scoring 13 points. Kohnle added 10 points off the bench.

Ainsworth scored seven points and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds. Michael Knoll had eight points and six boards.

St. Ambrose will visit Culver-Stockton Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the team's final game before the holidays.
