St. Ambrose hangs on to snap four-game skid
Sam Ainsworth and Greg Wagner each came off the bench to score 15 points and St. Ambrose held on down the stretch to take down Cardinal Stritch 68-67 Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and moved the Bees to 8-16 overall and 6-10 in the CCAC.
Jacoby Posley, who matched Ainsworth and Wagner with 15 points, hit two 3-pointers sandwiched around a Geordon Hetherton free throw to give SAU its largest lead of the game at 48-35 not even four minutes into the second half.
Cardinal Stritch (10-17, 7-10 CCAC) made several runs, once getting as close as 55-53, but each time St. Ambrose had the answer.
Hetherton hit two from the line to push the lead to six points with 2:54 left, but five quick points from the Wolves cut the SAU lead to just 1 with 2:04 to play.
The the Bees' defense came up big, first forcing a 3-point miss then a turnover before Hetherton was fouled. His two free throws pushed the lead to 68-65 with 24 seconds on the clock.
And unlike the teams' earlier meeting this season where Cardinal Stritch won on a shot in the final seconds, this time the Bees got the breaks.
On their next possession, the Wolves grabbed an offensive rebound and scored while drawing the foul. But the potential game-tying free throw was off and Ainsworth yanked down the board. He was immediately fouled with 12 seconds left but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. CSU raced down court but the Wolves' shot to win bounced off the rim and into the arms of Ainsworth as the horn sounded.
SAU shot 8-of-16 from beyond the arc and finished at 48.1 percent overall for the game.
Michael Knoll finished with eight points and seven rebounds and Hetherton added seven points, five boards and eight assists.
With just five regular season games remaining, the Bees hope to make a push to earn a spot in the eight-team CCAC Tournament. The stretch run continues Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Trinity International.
