St. Ambrose falls in overtime at Holy Cross

St. Ambrose was unable to hold on to a 13-point lead in the final eight minutes of regulation and fell at Holy Cross 80-75 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Zane Witt's jumper gave the Bees a 59-46 lead with exactly eight minutes to play, but SAU would only score eight more points in regulation.

Holy Cross (8-11, 5-7 CCAC) needed just four minutes to trim the deficit to three as a 12-2 run closed the gap to 61-58. After the Saints closed to within 63-62, St. Ambrose (12-7, 5-7 CCAC) seemingly regained control as Will Spriggs and Guillermo Narbona each knocked down jumpers to rebuild a 67-62 lead with a minute remaining.

However SAU would not attempt another field goal in the last minute. Holy Cross scored to cut the margin to 67-64, and following a Bee turnover, tied the game with a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left. SAU didn't get off a final shot as another turnover sent the teams to overtime.

Spriggs and Atem Agot scored early in the extra session to put St. Ambrose in front 71-68. Collin Wainscott's basket gave the Bees their final lead at 73-72 with two minutes on the clock. Two free throws put the Saints back in front and in the final minute, HC hit a big jumper to take a 76-73 lead.

Narbona tried a game-tying 3-pointer but misfired leading to a Saint free throw and a 77-73 advantage. Ignacio Dacunda scored to get the Bees back to within two but the Saints hit three free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure the victory.

SAU limited HC to 38.2-percent shooting from the floor but the Bees were hurt on the boards. Holy Cross grabbed a 53-39 rebounding advantage to outscore SAU 15-2 on second-chance points.

Agot led St. Ambrose with 15 points and seven rebounds. Grant Mason scored 14 to go along with six boards and three assists. Wainscott (12) and Spriggs (11) combined for 23 points off the Bee bench.

Narbona finished with eight points and six rebounds. Kieran Farrell scored seven, and Witt, Dacunda, Austin Born and Solomon Garrison each netted two.

The Bees, who have lost three in a row, will look to bounce back Wednesday at Calumet.
