Pride pull away in second half to down Bees
Clarke scored 39 points over the final 10 minutes to run away from St. Ambrose for a 95-76 victory in Dubuque, Iowa, Wednesday night.
Solomon Garrison knocked down a 3-pointer for the Bees to tie the score at 56-56 with just over 10 minutes left.
But then Clarke (3-4) slowly pulled away.
It started with an 8-0 Pride run and the Bee deficit reached double digits at 69-59 with 5:21 remaining. An Ignacio Dacunda reduced the margin to 69-60 but that was as close as SAU would get the rest of the way.
St. Ambrose (1-3) led 39-36 at the half but struggled to slow Clarke in the second half. The Pride shot nearly 60 percent from the floor (16-of-27) and hit 24-of-28 free throws (85.7 percent) over the final 20 minutes. Clarke outscored SAU 39-20 in the second half.
The strong close helped the Pride shoot nearly 50 percent (27-of-55) from the field for the game. The Bees shot just over 40 percent, including a 6-of-31 performance from 3-point range.
SAU was also outscored 32-14 from the line, with much of that discrepancy coming in the second half.
Dacunda led the Bees with 20 points. He added six rebounds, two blocked shots, one assist and one steal in the loss.
Nikos Gerokostas came off the bench to contribute 14 points and five rebounds. Kieran Farrell gave SAU three players in double figures, scoring 10.
Garrison and Fran Lopez Alameda each scored eight points. Lopez Alameda grabbed a team-best 13 boards. Nolan Sexton and Guillermo Narbona finished with six points apiece. Nolan Deitrich netted three points and Alec Platipodis added one.
The Bees will host Oakland City Saturday in SAU's home opener.
