SAU goes to double-OT to take down Jaguars
Guillermo Narbona finished with 29 points and St. Ambrose got a big boost from its bench in defeating Governors State 106-100 in double-overtime Wednesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.
Narbona scored four points in the second overtime, but he was overshadowed by Kieran Farrell and Collin Wainscott over those final five minutes of the team's conference opener.
Wainscott started the second overtime with a 3-pointer, and he combined with Farrell, who grabbed three big rebounds late, to knock down 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to hold off another potential Jaguar rally. Wainscott and Farrell each scored five points in the final period.
St. Ambrose (3-3, 1-0 CCAC) was finally able to prevail after holding leads late at both the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime.
In regulation, the Bees, who battled back from an 11-point second-half deficit, led 81-78 on two Wainscott free throws with 11 seconds remaining. But Governors State (3-3, 0-1 CCAC) got two looks at a game-tying three, and converted the second one with 0.4 seconds left on the clock, to tie the score at 81-81 and force overtime.
SAU stormed out to an 88-81 lead in overtime behind four quick points from Narbona and a triple from Wainscott. The lead was still at seven at 90-83 after two Narbona free throws with 2:09 on the clock. But the Jaguars again rallied, this time with a 9-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws with nine seconds left, to tie the score at 92-92. Nolan Deitrich missed a potential game-winning three at the buzzer.
Wainscott and Narbona drilled 3-pointers around two Farrell free throws to help SAU open up a 100-96 lead in the second overtime. GSU got to within one at 101-100 with 54 seconds remaining before Narbona split two from the line with 33 seconds left. The Jaguars missed a potential game-tying jumper and Farrell pulled down the rebound while getting fouled and made both free throws to build a 104-100 lead. A Governors State three was off the mark, leading to another Farrell rebound and two late Wainscott free throws to close out the scoring.
Along with leading all players in scoring with 29 points, Narbona added 11 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a blocked shot in the victory.
The St. Ambrose bench combined for 62 points with three Bee reserves finishing in double figures. Deitrich, who was 4-of-9 from 3-point range, scored 21 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Ignacio Dacunda added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out late in the first overtime. Wainscott, who was 4-of-8 from deep, chipped in with 16 points and seven boards.
Zane Witt (four points) and Solomon Garrison (two) also came off the bench to score for the Bees.
Farrell finished with nine points and nine rebounds and Fran Lopez Alameda netted six points.
SAU will visit Indiana Northwest Saturday.
