Missed opportunities late lead to loss at CCSJ

St. Ambrose had several opportunities late, but couldn't convert enough of them in falling at Calumet 65-62 in Whiting, Ind., Tuesday afternoon.

The Bees, who recovered from a seven-point halftime deficit, led by as many as nine points five minutes into the second half, but the game went back-and-forth down the stretch.

St. Ambrose (3-5, 1-2 CCAC) took a 57-55 lead on a Kieran Farrell three-point play with 4:45 remaining. But SAU struggled to score from there.

Baskets from Ignacio Dacunda and Guillermo Narbona had the team down 62-61 with just under three minutes remaining. SAU would score just one more point the rest of the way.

Down 63-61, Kevin Williams missed a 3-pointer, and after a defensive stop, Narbona had a long jumper spin out and Dacunda couldn't score after coming down with the offensive rebound.

Calumet (3-5, 2-2 CCAC) made 1-of-2 from the line to give St. Ambrose another chance. Collin Wainscott misfired on a three but Nolan Deitrich tracked down the rebound, leading to a Narbona free throw. CCSJ split two free throws to go up 65-62 with five seconds left, giving SAU a final opportunity. But Dacunda's off-balance three at the buzzer was off the mark.

In those nearly three minutes to end the game, the Bees went 0-for-5 from the floor and committed a turnover. That allowed the Crimson Wave to hold on for victory.

SAU shot 45 percent from the floor, but struggled from deep, making only 5-of-19 3-point attempts. The Bees were also only 3-of-5 from the line.

Calumet, meanwhile, shot less than 43 percent overall, but hit 9-of-20 from 3-point range. The Wave also had free throw issues, making only 10-of-21, but still outscored the Bees by seven from the line.

Narbona, who helped SAU to a 28-12 edge in points in the paint, scored a game-high 21 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

Dacunda was the only other Bees to score in double figures. He finished with 12 to go along with eight boards and five assists.

Farrell scored nine points and seven. Fran Lopez Alameda netted four points while Deitrich, Williams and Ryan Kenney scored three points apiece.

SAU will host Mount Marty Saturday.
