Late rally not enough in 82-77 loss at Olivet Nazarene
Despite a late furious rally, St. Ambrose came up short in an 82-77 loss at Olivet Nazarene Wednesday night in Bourbonnais, Ill.
Trailing 74-65 with a minute to play, the Bees never quit.
Nolan Deitrich, Collin Wainscott and Guillermo Narbona hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to close the gap to 80-74 with 13 seconds left.
St. Ambrose (5-10, 2-5 CCAC) got the ball back after a turnover and Deitrich was fouled, hitting one of his two free throw attempts. Ignacio Dacunda then got a steal on the inbounds and converted a layup to get SAU to within a single possession at 80-77.
But with just one second left on the clock, the Bees were forced to foul and the Tigers hit two free throws to secure the victory.
St. Ambrose went toe-to-toe with CCAC-leading Olivet Nazarene (11-4, 7-0 CCAC) in a game that neither team held a lead of more than nine points.
The Bees finished with a higher shooting percentage (55.4 percent to 48.4 percent) and matched the Tigers by hitting 9 3-point tries. SAU was only slightly outscored from the line, losing the free-throw battle 11-6.
The Bees were out-rebounded 33-28 with the Tigers pulling down 11 offensive boards, leading to ONU finishing with a 14-4 edge in second-chance points.
Narbona, who was 12-of-16 from the field, scored a team-high 28 points to lead St. Ambrose.
Dacunda came off the bench to score 16 points and Wainscott netted 13 to give SAU three players in double figures.
