Dacunda reaches 1000-point club in win over Eagles

Ignacio Dacunda was one of five Bees in double figures to lead St. Ambrose to a 92-78 win over Judson in Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon.

Dacunda punctuated the victory with a break-away dunk late, giving him 20 points in the game and 1000 in his four-year SAU career.

It was a workmanlike win for St. Ambrose (7-11, 4-6 CCAC).

The Bees shot better than 53 percent from the floor, including an 8-of-21 performance from beyond the arc, and committed just seven turnovers.

After falling behind 16-15 early, it was Dacunda who got SAU going by hitting a pair of free throws. Then Kieran Farrell scored three straight points. That was followed by a Nolan Deitrich 3-pointer. Then baskets from Guillermo Narbona and Deitrich closed out the 12-0 run that pushed St. Ambrose in front 27-16.

The margin was 46-35 at the half.

Judson (3-15, 0-10 CCAC) got to within 62-58 midway through the second half. Dacunda again reversed momentum from the line, hitting one free throw. Narbona followed with three free throws of his own. Then it was Razak Sudani's turn as the freshman hit two from the line. Solomon Garrison kept the run going with a pair of layups sandwiched around a steal. That wrapped up the 10-point spurt that pushed the lead to 72-58 with seven minutes to play.

While the lead remained in double figures the rest of the way, the question became would Dacunda join the 1000-point club.

The senior from Concordia, Argentina, entered the game needing 20 points and got half of those in the first half. He scored the Bees' first five points of the second half but then just added that one free throw giving him 996 points in his career with two minutes left.

He scored with 1:46 to play to up the lead to 84-71, and then inside the final 30 seconds, Dacunda got behind the defense and threw down a dunk to reach the milestone.

He became the 51st player to score 1000 points in an SAU men's basketball uniform.

Deitrich came off the bench to score 16 points. Collin Wainscott hit four 3-pointers to score 14. Narbona had 12 and Sundani finished with 11 in the win.

Garrison scored six points, Farrell finished with five, and Nikos Gerokostas and Zane Witt scored four apiece.

Dacunda and the Bees will host Calumet Wednesday.
