St. Ambrose comes up short in high-scoring affair
On a night when both teams shot better than 56 percent from the field, St. Ambrose came up a little short, falling to Calumet at Lee Lohman Arena 98-90 Wednesday night.
The two teams combined for 108 points in the second half.
The Bees struggled to get stops, allowing the Crimson Wave to shoot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) over the final 20 minutes.
Trailing 41-39 at the half, St. Ambrose (7-12, 4-7 CCAC) fell behind by as many as 11 points, as late as 84-73 with less than four minutes to play.
But the Bees, made a run. Three-pointers from Collin Wainscott, Nolan Deitrich and Guillermo Narbona came as part of a 15-7 spurt that cut the deficit to 91-88 with 40 seconds left.
Ignacio Dacunda followed two CCSJ free throws with a layup to keep the margin at 93-90 with 30 seconds on the clock.
After Calumet (10-8, 6-5 CCAC) split two free throws, Deitrich misfired on a three that would have brought St. Ambrose to within a point. The Wave added four free throws over the final 11 seconds to account for the final score.
The loss came after SAU got off to a fast start. The Bees led 12-2 three minutes into the contest. But St. Ambrose allowed Calumet to get back into the game by committing 12 first-half turnovers.
SAU finished with 17 turnovers, which led to 31 CCSJ points. The Wave had just 11 turnovers, which the Bees turned into just nine points.
Calumet finished 35-of-62 from the floor (56.5 percent), 9-of-22 from beyond the arc (40.9 percent) and 19-of-25 from the line (76 percent). St. Ambrose shot 36-of-61 overall (59 percent), including a 10-of-22 mark from 3-point range (45.5 percent). SAU was just 8-of-14 from the line.
Narbona and Dacunda each scored 20 points. Narbona added nine rebounds while Dacunda posted six boards, five assists and three steals.
Nikos Gerokostas (16), Wainscott (12) and Deitrich (12) also scored in double figures.
Razak Sudani finished with eight points and Solomon Garrison netted two.
The Bees will host Indiana Northwest Saturday.
