Bees rally to defeat RedHawks in overtime
After scoring just a single point in the first half in watching St. Ambrose fall behind 46-32 at the break, Ignacio Dacunda sparked a rally to help the Bees to a 96-91 overtime victory over Indiana Northwest Saturday at Lee Lohman Arena.
Dacunda scored 21 points in the second half, including a driving layup in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime. He then grabbed an offensive rebound on SAU's first possession of the extra session and scored to give the Bees a lead they would not relinquish.
Collin Wainscott knocked down a 3-pointer to open up a 90-85 lead in overtime. After a RedHawk basket, Dacunda capped his 26-point afternoon with a layup to build a 92-87 lead with just over two minutes left.
Indiana Northwest (8-12, 6-6 CCAC) got within 92-91 with 30 seconds left. Kieran Farrell hit two big free throws to extend the lead to three. Then after an offensive foul call on the RedHawks, Guillermo Narbona sealed the win with a pair from the line.
After shooting just 11-of-33 from the field in the first half, St. Ambrose (8-12, 5-7 CCAC) was 22-of-39 from the floor to score 53 second-half points.
The Bees secured the comeback thanks to their defense in overtime. SAU was just 3-of-7 from the field over those five extra minutes but limited IU Northwest to 2-of-8 shooting.
The strong closing allowed St. Ambrose to shoot nearly 46 percent for the game. The Bees hit 13-of-32 from beyond the arc and grabbed a 44-36 edge on the boards.
Dacunda led the way with 26 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Despite missing all three of his first-half field-goal attempts, he finished 11-of-19 from the floor.
Narbona scored 24 points while adding five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
Wainscott and Nolan Deitrich combined to go 10-of-17 from 3-point range and each netted 17 points. Farrell was the fifth Bee to score in double figures, finishing with 10. He was also credited with a game-high four steals.
Kevin Williams scored two points in the win.
The Bees will visit Viterbo Wednesday.
