Narbona tops 1000 points as Deitrich nails game winner
Guillermo Narbona hit a major milestone and Nolan Deitrich hit a game winner as St. Ambrose guaranteed itself a spot in next week's CCAC Tournament with an 82-79 win at Holy Cross Saturday afternoon.
Narbona became the 52nd Bee in program history to score 1000 career points but it was Deitrich's late 3-pointer that proved to be the difference.
With the game tied at 79-79 and the clock running down, Collin Wainscott found Deitrich, who buried a three from the corner with 3.7 seconds remaining.
A last-second, potential game-tying triple from the Saints was off the mark at the buzzer.
The win moved St. Ambrose (13-15) to 10-10 in conference play and locked up the No. 6 seed in the CCAC Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal games Wednesday.
Along with locking up a postseason bid, the other major storyline was Narbona reaching the 1000-point milestone.
The junior forward from Malaga, Spain, started slowly Saturday, missing his first five shots from the field and not scoring until midway through the opening half. Narbona, who entered the game needing 17 points for 1000, had just six points at the half, but picked up his play in the second half.
Then, just over eight minutes into the half, Narbona hit the mark, knocking down a 3-pointer to give him 18 points in the game and 1001 points in his three-year SAU career.
He finished with 22 points to sit at 1005 career points.
Narbona helped St. Ambrose shot better than 55 percent from the floor for the game. And while Holy Cross (9-19, 4-16 CCAC) shot just under 48 percent, the Saints finished 14-of-29 from beyond the arc. The Bees were just 10-of-27 from 3-point range.
Ignacio Dacunda led SAU with 23 points. He also added six rebounds and six assists in the win.
Deitrich came off the bench to throw in 13 points.
Ryan Kenney scored nine points, Wainscott had seven, Nikos Gerokostas netted four, and Kieran Farrell and Solomon Garrison ended with two points apiece.
Narbona grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
