Riggs leads Bees at Highland Championship
Colin Riggs shot a 2-under 70 on the final day of the Highland Championship to finish in eighth place individually. That came on the heels of a 1-over 73 to begin play Sunday. His 1-under 143 left him just two shots out of a top-three finish at the two-day event hosted by Augustana at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill.
Dylan McAleer added a 1-over 145 with rounds of 73 and 72 to finish 14th overall. Mason Steinert (74-77) shot a 151, Jacob Stoetzel (77-77) carded a 154 and Tim Marcum (77-84) added a 161 to help St. Ambrose place fourth in the 21-team tournament. SAU had rounds of 297 and 296 for a 593 total. Millikin took the team title with a 570.
Nathan Unes, Carsen Theis and Ben King each fired a 1-under 71 to lead a second Bee team. Unes followed his 71 with a 73 to finish 13th with a 144. Theis also earned a top-20 finish. He shot a 77 Sunday before closing with his 71 for a 148 and a share of 20th. Jacob Lange (75-76) shot a 151 and King followed up a first-round 85 with his 71 for a 156. The big second day helped the team climb into seventh place with a 599 (308-291).
St. Ambrose had four total teams compete. Vinny Messana (72-78) led the third team with a 150. Also playing were Hayden Lee (81-73=154), Bradley Schifeling (82-75=157), Brody Miguel (82-80=162) and Josh Vanderploeg (81-81=163). The fourth team consisted of Zach Priami (80-79=159), Nathan Newman (85-75=160), Carson Horner (77-87=164) and Luke Haedt (86-85=171).
North Central's Mitchell Mazzei claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 135.
SAU will next compete in the Mount Mercy Mustang Fall Championship Saturday and Sunday at Hunters Ridge in Marion, Iowa.
