Riggs finishes fifth to lead SAU at Cardinal Classic
Colin Riggs shot a second-round 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for fifth place at the Cardinal Classic hosted by North Central at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Bolingbrook, Ill.
Riggs opened with a 78 Monday before coming back with his 70 Tuesday. His 148 placed him fifth among the field of 13 teams and 66 total golfers.
Riggs was joined inside the top 10 by Carsen Theis, who started with an even-par 72 in the first round. He closed with a 77 for a 149, good for a share of seventh place.
Griffin Smits finished in a tie for 15th. He carded rounds of 78 and 74 for a 152. Dylan McAleer shot a 155 (76-79) and Ben King fired a 161 (81-80).
St. Ambrose had rounds of 304 and 300 for a 604 total. That was enough for third place. Aurora won the event with a 592 (293-299), finishing just a single shot ahead of North Central (298-295=593).
A second SAU team finished seventh with a 625 (318-307).
Mason Steinert led that team with a 153 (78-75). Also competing for the Bees were Jacob Stoetzel (79-78=157), Tim Marcum (81-77=158), Vinny Messana (82-77=159) and Nathan Unes (80-81=161).
North Central's Mitchell Mazzei claimed individual medalist honors with a 5-under 139. He shot a 4-under 68 before finishing with a 1-under 71 Tuesday.
St. Ambrose will host the CCAC Championships next Monday and Tuesday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
