McAleer, Bees win CCAC Championships

Behind the play of individual medalist Dylan McAleer, St. Ambrose led wire-to-wire in claiming its first CCAC Men's Golf Championship Tuesday.

The Bees put together a three-round total of 955 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., to defeat second-place Olivet Nazarene by 17 strokes.

SAU posted three of the six lowest rounds of the two-day event. It started with a 315, a score matched by Holy Cross, to begin play Monday morning. Later that day, the Bees put together a 324 to build a 17-shot lead over second-place Viterbo heading into Tuesday's action.

St. Ambrose left no doubt Tuesday.

A closing 316 gave the Bees their first men's golf conference title since the 2009 team won what was the program's sixth-straight Midwest Collegiate Conference crown.

And McAleer, who won the first individual CCAC Championship by a Bee men's golfer, led the way.

After finishing fourth in the conference tournament in 2023 and tying for fifth a year ago, the senior from DeWitt, Iowa, opened with a 2-over 73, which proved to be the low round of the entire tournament. He added a 78 later Monday for a 4-shot advantage heading into the final round.

McAleer held off a fast-charging Jacob Palmer from Holy Cross. After a bogey on No. 12, McAleer shot par on five straight holes to maintain a two-shot lead going to No. 18. There, a bogey, gave him a 78 and the conference title.

McAleer finished with a 229 while Palmer, thanks to a final-round 74, carded a 230 for runner-up honors.

The Bees put two on the all-tournament team. Joining McAleer, was Griffin Smits, who took fourth with a 237 (79-77-81).

Colin Riggs narrowly missed a top-five showing as he tied for sixth with a 243 (81-82-80). Carsen Theis finished with a 252 (84-87-81). Jacob Stoetzel shot an 82 in the opening round and then came back with an important 77 in the title-clinching round Tuesday. Tim Marcum shot a second-round 89.

St. Ambrose will now prepare for the NAIA Championships, also played at TPC Deere Run, May 20-23.
