Dominating second quarter propels Bees past Eagles

St. Ambrose used a dominating second quarter to get past Robert Morris 15-7 Wednesday night in Arlington Heights, Ill.

The Bees outscored the Eagles 8-1, thanks to outshooting them 22-4 in the period in getting back above .500 at 5-4 this season.

The frame actually started with a Robert Morris goal that gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead. But then it was all St. Ambrose, largely behind the play of Nelson Velez.

Velez first found Thomas Parker, who scored a game-tying goal. Then Velez scored back-to-back goals himself, coming just 30 seconds apart, to give St. Ambrose a 5-3 lead. Velez then assisted goals by Jared Morgan, Parker and Josh Bales as the lead grew to 8-3. Unassisted goals from Hunter Northway and Morgan 27 seconds apart gave the Bees a 10-3 lead at the half.

Robert Morris (2-7) got one goal back to start the second half, but goals from Morgan and Matt Romero supplied a 12-4 lead and SAU was not seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Velez finished with two goals and five assists in the victory. Morgan tallied five goals and added an assist. Parker recorded a hat trick and Romero scored a pair of goals and assisted on another.

Anthony Incesti scored the game's first goal and Austin Adams was credited with a fourth-quarter assist for the Bees.

St. Ambrose finished with a 59-29 edge in shots. Along with the big second quarter, the Bees outshot the Eagles 15-4 in the third period.

Louis Mallillin came up with 12 saves to earn the win.

SAU will now begin a stretch of three straight games against opponents receiving votes in the NAIA top-10 poll Saturday at the University of St. Mary.
