Bees push No. 6 Indiana Tech in 12-11 thriller
St. Ambrose pushed sixth-ranked Indiana Tech to the brink Sunday afternoon but ultimately fell 12-11 in a tightly contested matchup at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.
Indiana Tech struck first with an extra-man goal midway through the opening quarter before adding another score late in the period to take a 2-0 lead. The Bees answered just before the end of the quarter when Ryan Swanson finished a feed from Zak Brown to cut the deficit to 2-1 after one.
St. Ambrose dominated the second quarter with a seven-goal outburst to seize control of the game. Zach Priami tied the game early in the quarter, and Cameron Washington quickly followed with a goal to give SAU its first lead. Mason Shackelford, Ayden Fraelle, and Washington again helped extend the run, pushing the Bees ahead 6-2.
Priami and Washington added two more goals late in the period as St. Ambrose built an 8-3 advantage. Indiana Tech responded with three quick goals before halftime, trimming the Bees' lead to 8-6 at the break.
The Bees kept the pressure on in the third quarter. Jagger Shaddix scored on an extra-man opportunity off an assist from Priami, and Washington followed with another power-play goal to give St. Ambrose its largest lead of the game at 10-6. Indiana Tech began chipping away late in the third with three straight goals to pull within 10-9 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Warriors completed the comeback early in the fourth quarter, scoring three consecutive goals to take their first lead since the opening period at 12-10. Priami added one more goal with time expiring to bring the Bees within one, but Indiana Tech held on for the narrow victory.
Washington led the Bees with four goals. Priami netted three, while Fraelle, Shackleford, Shaddix, and Swanson tallied one each. Brown and Swanson collected two assists apiece. Shaddix, Priami, Deegan Reece, Carter Gras, and Joey Curzon recorded one assist. Priami and Swanson challenged the Warriors' goalie, posting nine shots each. Followed by Brown with six, Washington with four, Fraelle and Shaddix with three, and Curzon and Shackleford with one.
Shackleford won 12 of the 22 faceoffs he was in.
Carter Gras collected 29 saves in goal for the Bees.
The Bees are next in action on the road in Fulton, Mo., where they will take on the William Woods Owls on Saturday, March 14th at 1 p.m.
