St. Ambrose drops conference opener at William Woods

The Bees traveled to Fulton, Mo., on Saturday, March 14th, to open Heart of America conference play. St. Ambrose erased an early deficit and briefly took the lead, but a fourth-quarter surge by William Woods handed the Bees an 11-8 loss on Saturday afternoon.

The Bees had a slow start in the first quarter, putting up seven shots but unable to find the back of the net. St. Ambrose responded in a big way in the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to completely flip the momentum. Zak Brown started the rally with an unassisted goal 50 seconds in, followed by a goal from Jagger Shaddix two minutes later to make it 2-4. Cameron Washington added another with a minute and a half remaining in the first half, and Zach Priami tied the game on an extra-man opportunity off an assist from Ryan Swanson. Moments later, Mason Shackelford finished the run with an unassisted goal, giving the Bees a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.

The Bees extended their lead in the third quarter as Brown and Swanson each found the net to push the score to 7-4. After William Woods responded with two goals, Swanson added another in the final minute of the period to give St. Ambrose an 8-6 advantage entering the fourth. That final push was not enough to keep the Bees ahead of the Owls. William Woods responded with five unanswered goals to put the game away.

Brown and Swanson led the Bees with two goals each. Priami, Shackelford, Shaddix, and Washington each tallied one goal. Additionally, Priami and Swanson got one assist. Swanson put up 10 shots for the Bees, followed by Brown and Priami with five, Shaddix with four, Washington with three, Deegan Reece with two, and Shackelford, Nick Toman, and Alex Wirth with one.

Several Bees collected ground balls, led by Shackelford with six, Swanson with five, and Brown with four. Garrett Lee gathered three caused turnovers. Brown, Priami, and Toman caused two turnovers, while Swanson, Aidan Fergus, Aiden Martinez, and Hunter Wahrenburg caused one.

St. Ambrose gained control of 12 out of 22 faceoffs with the help of Shackelford.

In goal, Carter Gras recorded 22 saves to keep the Bees competitive throughout.

The Bees are next in action Saturday, March 21st, as they travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on the Columbia Cougars at 3:00 p.m.
