SAU men first, women third at Luther Invitational

The St. Ambrose men won the team title at the two-day Luther Invitational Saturday, defeating host Luther by 230 points. The SAU women finished third overall.

The men finished with 895 points while Luther was second with 665.5 points. Wis.-La Crosse (639.5), Iowa Lakes (254) and Saint Mary's (180) rounded out the field.

Nathan Kuszynski and Kevin Krupitzer each won three individual events for the Bee men.

Kuszynski won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.03 with teammate Sam Sutter finishing fourth. Kuszynski also took the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:17.53 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.58. Nolan Hare was fourth in the 200 back.

Krupitzer touched first in both the 100-yard (57.92 seconds) and 200-yard (2:11.37) breaststroke. Carmelo Patti was third in the 200 breast and fourth in the 100 breast, with Mitch Berendes taking fifth. Krupitzer (2:02.25) and Patti finished 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley. Victor Del Rio Foces was third and Noah Hoogestraat finished fourth.

Del Rio Foces won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.20 with Reece Powell ending in fourth place.

Jonathan Whittle, Jason Schuler, Ryan Warrick and Powell won the 200-freestyle relay in 1:28.87.

St. Ambrose had three top-five finishes in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Powell was second, Warrick third and Berendes fifth in the 50 free, and Del Rio Foces was second, Whittle third and Warrick fifth in the 100 free.

Sutter was runner-up in the 1650-yard freestyle, Schuler took third in the 100-yard butterfly and Grant Hamilton was fifth in the 200-yard butterfly.

The Bees also finished second in four relays - 400-yard medley relay (Hoogestraat, Patti, Hamilton, Warrick); 200-yard medley relay (Del Rio Foces, Krupitzer, Schuler, Powell); 800-yard freestyle relay (Kuszynski, Del Rio Foces, Krupitzer, Patti); and 400-yard freestyle relay (Whittle, Warrick, Krupitzer, Del Rio Foces).

On the women's side, Luther took home the team title with 767 points. Wis.-La Crosse was second with 765 points and the Bees were third with 636 points. Iowa Lakes (344) and Saint Mary's (223) also competed.

Shraddha Sudhir led St. Ambrose with three first-place times. She won both the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events in times of 2:17.20 and 4:56.71, respectively. Kelly Baughman took fifth in the 200 IM. Sudhir also took the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:58.66.

Andrea Adam won both diving events, with a score of 253.30 in the 1-meter event and a score of 254.90 in the 3-meter dive. Teammate Taylor Madison finished fourth and fifth.

Catie Schimmelpfenning was the other individual winner for the Bees. Her effort of 2:00.96 was the winning time in the 200-yard freestyle.

Adam, Schimmelpfenning, Dani Crum and Baughman teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.69.

Schimmelpfenning was runner-up in two individual events - finishing second in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle swims. Adam was third and Shelby Thede fifth in the 50 free, while Crum and Baughman finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 free.

Bethany Anderson took second in the 100-yard butterfly (with Baughman finishing fourth) and third in the 500-yard freestyle. Crum was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke.

The team of Crum, Baughman, Anderson and Schimmelpfenning came in second in the 400-yard medley relay and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Schimmelpfenning, Crum, Sudhir and Baughman were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Bees will next compete in the Coe Kohawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dec. 1-2.
