SAU defeats St. Mary on Senior Day

In its final home dual of the year, St. Ambrose defeated St. Mary (Kan.) Saturday. The men won 134-51 while the women were victorious 115-52.

On Senior Day, one of two Bee seniors, Mitch Berendes, won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.71 seconds. He edged teammate Carmelo Patti, who was second in 22.80 seconds. Berendes also finished second to Reece Powell (51.74 seconds) in the 100-yard freestyle.

The other SAU senior, Jason Schuler, teamed with Victor Del Rio Foces, Keagan Dolphin and Bryce Hoffer to take second in the 200-yard medley relay. Teammates Ryan Warrick, Kevin Krupitzer, Josh Fleming and Tyler Finney won the event in 1:44.05.

Del Rio Foces won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.01 seconds. Dolphin touched first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:35.44. David Hall finished second in both events.

Noah Hoogestraat (2:01.22) and Diego Hernandez finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, and Nathan Kuszynski (2:05.44) and Hoffer went 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Sam Sutter earned a pair of runner-up finishes, those coming in the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle swims. Kuszynski, Finney, Warrick and Nolan Hare placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Eight different Bees were the top scorers in an individual event on the women's side.

Mallory Krpan won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.32 seconds and Shelby Thede was runner-up in 27.87 seconds. Adyson McKinney took the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.33, Catie Schimmelpfenning won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.02, and Grace Johanns touched the wall in 6:14.32 to win the 500-yard freestyle. Johanns also placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Dani Crum won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.43, Kelly Baughman won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.15 and Shraddha Sudhir won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:33.43.

The Bees also finished 1-2 in the 1-meter diving event with Taylor Madison (247.35) edging Andrea Adam (246.45) for first place.

The 200-yard medley relay team of McKinney, Baughman, Schimmelpfenning and Krpan had a winning time of 2:01.81. Thede, Sudhir, Crum and Laura Williams took second. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, McKinney, Thede, Baughman and Schimmelpfenning combined to win in 3:53.40.

St. Ambrose will have more than a month off before competing at Coe College on Jan. 26.
