Bees earn multiple top-eight finishes at Rochester Invite

St. Ambrose reached the midpoint of its season by competing in the three-day Rochester Invite hosted by St. Cloud State in Rochester, Minn.

The event featured preliminary races each morning and A, B, C and D finals each evening. The Bees had multiple performers reach the Championship finals.

Cory Werrett and Marat Usov each won individuals titles.

Werrett won both the 100 free (43.59 seconds) and 100 breast (54.56). He was also third in the 50 free in 20.00 seconds.

Usov was the champion in the 400 IM, winning in 4:00.15. He was also runner-up in a pair of events - the 200 fly (1:53.91) and the 500 free (4:36.42).

Jayden Coetzer had a big week, taking second in the 100 fly (48.21) and the 100 back (49.37), third in the 200 back (1:51.27) and fifth in the 100 IM (52.61).

Riley Stevenson also placed inside the top eight in four different individual events, taking fourth in both the 100 back (49.97) and 100 IM (52.54) and finishing seventh in both the 50 free (20.84) and the 100 free (46.36).

Luke Thomas and Juan De Armas were both in the top eight in three events. Thomas was third in the 200 breast (2:05.52), fifth in the 100 fly (50.52) and eighth in the 100 breast (56.74). De Armas took fifth in the 200 free (1:43.69), sixth in the 1650 free (16:38.05) and eighth in the 500 free (4:50.31).

Gavin Hopewell also had multiple top-eight performances. He was sixth in the 200 back (1:54.45) and seventh in the 100 IM (54.10).

Luke Sproule (fifth in the 400 IM in 4:15.24), Carter Gaber (seventh in the 100 back in 51.77) and Lane Otte (eighth in the 3-meter diving with a score of 311.85) also competed in the Championship finals.

The SAU men also had at least one team finish in the top eight in each of the five relays. De Armas, Usov, Werrett and Coetzer were second in the 800 free relay in 6:50.42. Coetzer, Werrett, Thomas and Usov were second in the 400 medley relay in 3:19.80. Werrett, Gaber, Hopewell and Stevenson were third in the 200 free relay in 1:22.26. Gaber, Usov, Werrett and Stevenson were third in the 400 free relay in 3:02.39. Coetzer, Werrett, Gaber and Stevenson were third in the 200 medley relay in 1:30.29. Hopewell, Coetzer, De Armas and Thomas were seventh in the 400 free relay in 3:08.15. Panagiotis Pappous, Thomas, Gonzalo Saenz and Carter Prull were eighth in the 200 free in 1:25.90. And Hopewell, Joe Wileman, Stevenson and Gaber were eighth in the 400 medley relay in 3:28.55.

The women had a pair of eighth-place individual finishers.

Bryn Kiley was eighth in the 500 free in 5:23.50 and Irene Artabe took eighth in the 100 IM with a time of 1:01.44.

The St. Ambrose men finished third overall with 1408.5 points, just 9.5 points out of second place. The Bee women were ninth with 403 total points. St. Cloud State won both the men's and women's team titles.

SAU will next compete at the Luther Norse Sprint Invite Jan. 10 in Decorah, Iowa.
