SAU downs Loras to open 2024-25 season

St. Ambrose served up a pair of wins to open the 2024-25 tennis season at North Scott High School Saturday morning. The Bee men swept Loras 7-0 while the SAU women won 5-2.

In the men's dual, St. Ambrose was pushed in a pair of singles matches. Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive needed a third-set super-tiebreaker in his 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 win at No. 1 singles. Jaime Febres was extended to a second-set tiebreaker in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 4.

The other four singles matches weren't as close.

Gabriel Guimaray cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 while Gianfranco Garcia won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Esteban Rocha didn't drop a game in his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Miguel Simpaio was victorious 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.

The Bees also swept the three doubles matches with the top team of Arevalo Piraquive and Guimaray winning 6-3. The No. 2 team of Garcia and Febres lost just a single game in their 6-1 win, and the No. 3 team of Rocha and Simpaio won 6-0.

The bottom of the SAU lineup carried the women to victory.

Hayden Evans and Paige Owens came through with big singles wins at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Evans won 6-3, 6-3 while Owens earned a 7-5, 6-4 win. Jenna Smithmeyer sailed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, and Audrey Pender picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6.

Chiara Aguirre Cortez fell in a third-set super-breaker at No. 1 singles 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. At No. 2, Yeva Shershan fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Aguirre Cortez and Shershan also fell in doubles, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. But the other two Bees doubles teams had no issues. Owens and Smithmeyer teamed for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Evans and Kate Jones combined for a 6-0 win at No. 3.

The men and women will return to action Monday as the Bees host Dubuque at 4 p.m. at North Scott.
