Men defeat Cornell, women beat Monmouth

The men's and women's tennis teams continued their early-fall-season success Saturday. The men defeated Cornell 6-1 while the women took down Monmouth 5-2.

The SAU men won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets.

Sebastian Arevalo Piraquive needed a first-set tiebreaker but was leading 7-6 (7-2), 3-0 before his opponent was forced to retire at No. 1 singles. Gabriel Guimaray won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.

Jaxson Eisenbarth was extended to a second-set breaker in his 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 6. Miguel Simpaio (6-2, 6-0) and Esteban Rocha (6-2, 6-2) won at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively.

The Bees (4-1) also took two of the three doubles matches. 

Simpaio and Rocha did not drop a game in their 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Gianfranco Garcia and Eisenbarth won 6-2 at No. 3.

The men will host Monmouth Tuesday.

The St. Ambrose women picked up four singles victories.

Julia Turek recovered from dropping the first set to prevail in a third-set super-tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.

The other three Bee victors each dropped just a single game. Hayden Evans at No. 3 and Jenna Smithmeyer at No. 6 won by 6-0, 6-1 scores. Paige Owens dropped a game in the first set in her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5.

SAU (3-2) cruised through the three doubles matches. Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Turek teamed for a 6-4 win at the top spot. Evans and Yeva Shershan won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 team of Owens and Smithmeyer earned a 6-0 win.

The women will head to Mount Vernon, Iowa, to battle Grinnell and Cornell next Sunday.
