Peters wins third straight race walk national championship
Anthony Peters (SR/Bartlett, Ill.) was crowned again.
The senior Exercise Science major captured his third consecutive 3,000m Race Walk title on Friday at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
Peters was on pace to break the collegiate record through the first half of the race, but couldn't break the mark, finishing with a winning time of 12:09.58.
He is only the 24th man in NAIA history to win the same event three consecutive years.
The Bees also got a huge fifth place finish from Emilio Mancha (SR/Elgin, Ill.) with a personal best time of 12:40.65, which earned SAU five more points to go along with the 10 Peters' received.
The Bees also had teammates do big things in the 1,000m run. Both Josh Pestka (JR/Long Grove, Iowa) and Rane Nichols (SR/Davenport, Iowa) advanced to Saturday's final after making their way through the semifinals. Pestka had the second fastest time in qualifying while Nichols heads into Saturday ranked sixth.
Jack Reemtsma improved on his seeded place in both the 60m hurdles and 400m dash but failed to moved on to the finals in either. In the 60m hurdles, Reemtsma came in ranked 18th and finished 17th with his second best career performance. He also had a second best time in the 400m, running 49.35 to finish 20th, ahead of his pre-meet 23rd ranking.
Heptathlon All-American Cole Connell (JR/Delmar, Iowa) competed in the high jump, but failed to clear the opening height.
The Bees are currently in third place with 15 points with just five of the 21 events having been scored. They will have scoring opportunities from Pestka and Nichols in the 1,000m final on Saturday.
