Bees sweep Trolls to win conference opener
St. Ambrose got off to a strong start in conference play in taking down Trinity Christian in three sets Tuesday night in Palos Heights, Ill.
Along with a 1-0 start in the CCAC, the 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 win evened the Bees' overall record at 1-1.
SAU dominated, finishing with 35 kills against just 14 hitting errors while limiting Trinity to 18 kills and forcing 20 errors. Five different Bees each had at least four kills.
St. Ambrose took control early, racing to a 6-1 lead in the opening set behind two kills apiece from Avery Clark and Jason Bageanis and aces from Clark and Jake Snyder. The lead was at least four points the rest of the set.
Kills from Clark and Skyler Marushige gave the Bees a 5-1 lead in the second. Trinity Christian (2-4, 0-1 CCAC) battled back to get even at 5-5. Another Clark kill broke the tie and sparked a three-point run that gave St. Ambrose a lead it would not give up as the Bees pulled away for a two-set lead.
The third set was close early, tied as late as 6-6. But kills from Snyder and Clark ignited a 6-1 run and Trinity never seriously threatened again.
Clark led the way with eight kills. Bageanis and Scott MacGillis each had seven. Marushige finished with six and Snyder had four in the win.
Snyder also led all players with 27 assists and Clark picked up a match-high 11 digs. Ricardo Ubior collected five digs.
The Bees will visit conference for Robert Morris Thursday night.
