Bees stumble in five sets to V-Hawks
Playing a fifth set for the first time all season, St. Ambrose fell to Viterbo 22-25, 25-21, 27-29, 25-20, 15-10 Tuesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.
After fighting off a set point to claim the third, the Bees led 20-19 late in the fourth. But that's when things came apart. SAU would not win another point in the set as Viterbo (8-6, 1-3 CCAC) won six in a row to force a decisive fifth set.
It didn't get any better for St. Ambrose in the final set.
A Skyler Marushige kill tied the set at 3-3 but that was followed by a string of four straight V-Hawk points. Scott MacGillis put down a kill to cut the deficit to 9-6 before a three-point Viterbo run broke things open. SAU would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
The Bees finished with 62 total kills and a .319 hitting percentage, a number higher than the V-Hawks' .280 mark.
MacGillis led all players with 19 kills. Jaylen Clark had 14 and Marushige added 11. Jason Bageanis recorded seven while Dom Marshall and Avery Clark each finished with four.
Jake Snyder had a match-high 55 assists to go along with nine digs. Dylan Herridge was credited with 16 digs and Avery Clark had 10. Ricardo Ubior picked up eight digs.
St. Ambrose, now 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference, will visit No. 10 Ottawa (Kan.) Saturday.
