St. Ambrose splits matches at SXU Tri-Match
St. Ambrose split its two matches at the Saint Xavier Tri-Match, losing to No. 2 Saint Xavier in three sets before defeating Cornerstone 3-0.
In the 25-23, 25-22, 25-17 win over Cornerstone, the Bees trailed 17-14 in the first. A kill from Jon Guch and an ace from Anthony Anderson came as part of a 4-0 run that gave SAU the lead. After the Golden Eagles pulled even, kills from Michael Bos and Pedro Zang, and a Kam Dixon ace gave St. Ambrose a 21-18 lead.
The lead grew to 23-19 before Cornerstone got within a single point. But kills from Charlie Flynn and an Eagle serving error gave the Bees the set.
SAU carried that momentum throughout the rest of the match to win in three.
Bos led the way with 11 kills. Zang put down nine. Each Bee had just one hitting error. Guch had five kills, Flynn added four and Ian Cordes finished with three.
Anderson led the Bees with 23 assists. Matt Cannon handed out five and Felipe Prieto recorded four. Ethan Karban picked up nine digs.
The day started with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 loss to the nationally-ranked Cougars.
SAU finished with just 19 total kills. Bos had six, Zang four and Flynn and Dixon finished with three apiece.
Anderson was credited with 12 assists and Prieto had four. Karban registered nine digs.
St. Ambrose (10-4, 1-1 CCAC) will visit Augustana Monday.
